Alabama Bankruptcy Lawyers: Personal Bankruptcy
With Offices Close to You Throughout Northern and Central Alabama
Some people think of bankruptcy as a financial ending, a dead end. At Pitts & Zanaty, L.L.C., we encourage clients to look at bankruptcy as a new financial beginning, a chance for a fresh start that is free from the bonds of unmanageable debt and financial worries.
We assist clients statewide throughout Alabama in Chapter 7, Chapter 11 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy proceedings. This page discusses the types of bankruptcy that are applicable to most people — Chapter 7 bankruptcy and Chapter 13 bankruptcy. For business and people with a very high debt load, a Chapter 11 bankruptcy may be the answer.

Chapter 7 Bankruptcy
A Chapter 7 bankruptcy is a debt liquidation bankruptcy. It is generally appropriate for people with limited financial resources and income. To be eligible for Chapter 7 relief, an applicant must meet certain eligibility criteria relating to their financial means.
The benefit of a Chapter 7 bankruptcy is that it results in a discharge of all dischargeable debts. Some debts like student loans and child support may not be subject to discharge, but many debts such as credit card debts, medical debts and other unsecured debts may be largely or entirely dischargeable.
Chapter 13 Bankruptcy
A Chapter 13 bankruptcy is a debt restructuring bankruptcy in which an applicant submits a repayment plan to a bankruptcy court judge. If your repayment schedule is approved by a bankruptcy court, you will be able to pay back debts in a more gradual and manageable fashion.
The Benefits of Personal Bankruptcy/Consumer Bankruptcy
Although bankruptcy is not the answer for everyone, a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 bankruptcy may be able to help you to:
- Stop creditor harassment and harassing collection calls
- Avoid a wage garnishment
- Avoid property repossessions (including car repossessions)
- Reduce or eliminate dischargeable debts (Chapter 7)
- Pay back debts more gradually (Chapter 13)
- Avoid a home foreclosure
